Dear Guenter:
I just returned from my visit to the Pantanal and must report that the trip was a total success. I had hoped to be there at a time when the waters were rising, yet to also experience them as they were still somewhat low. The time was perfect. You’d promised me that Pedro Paulo was an excellent guide. In fact he certainly was. He and I had a good time sharing how better to speak each others’ languages and he was an excellent help in teaching me how to express Portuguese, especially Brazilian Portuguese better. We identified about a hundred birds, many which for me were completely new. I enjoyed the times with him whether in the early morning pre-dawn walking or driving or on horseback or in a boat. He has sharp eyes and pointed out birds and animals that I’d have missed (and I’m a guide in the western U.S.). He’s an excellent employee for you, which I know you already realize. Whenever he referred to you it wasn’t as “My boss,” but “My friend Guenter Stysch.” I have 80 employees at our guest ranch and if even one of them took the care with our vehicles that he did with yours it would help make the cars last longer. He appreciates having an excellent vehicle and took care of it not just as if it were his own but as if it were his own and the last one he would ever have in his life. You can be proud of him in all aspects. The lodges were very well chosen. The food was excellent. The places we went were similar yet different enough that I felt I got a good feel for the Pantanal. I learned as well a saw. I felt secure at all times. Use me as a reference any time. If I go back to Brazil again, which continues to intrigue me, I shall contact you and will be glad to refer your services to anyone wishing to go there. Thanks.
