Barra do Garças - Mato Grosso

Barra do Garças is a small town in the federal state of Mato Grosso, situated about 507 km from Cuiabá. On average, it lies 318 metres above sea level. The town has approximately 55,000 inhabitants. The municipal territory, rural areas included, spans 8761,38 km² (or roughly three times the size of Luxembourg).

Barra do Garças seems predestined for tourism. There are paradisal beaches in June, July and August (when it is winter in the rest of South Brazil), thanks to numerous thermal springs, not unlike those in Caldas Novas. Travellers interested in mythology might find their Mecca in Alto Paraíso, in the mountains of Serra do Roncador (rough translation: mountains of the snorer).

A certain Colonel Fawcett, who was looking for the fleeing civilisation of the fallen Atlantis, is said to have been lost there. Legend has it that the lost people of Atlantis (others even say they were extra-terrestrials) not only live here, but that they have underground cities, whose entrances can be found on the mountain ridges. The main portal is said to be a lagoon filled with crystal water. To reach the cities one has to dive into this lagoon. It is said that another entrance exists next to a crystal, perfectly round and transparent rock of about 10 metres in diameter.

The predecessors of the Xavante Indios used to make jokes about this rock, that they could see themselves in its mirroring surface as in a hall of mirrors in an amusement park.

Barra do Garças will be your first destination on the way to the reservations of the Xavante and Jacare (Xingu) Indios in Canarana, where you will spend one night at a hotel.
