Barra do Garças - Mato Grosso
Barra do Garças is a small town in the federal state of Mato Grosso, situated about 507 km from Cuiabá. On average, it lies 318 metres above sea level. The town has approximately 55,000 inhabitants. The municipal territory, rural areas included, spans 8761,38 km² (or roughly three times the size of Luxembourg).
Barra do Garças seems predestined for tourism. There are paradisal
beaches in June, July and August (when it is winter in the rest of South Brazil), thanks to
numerous thermal springs, not unlike those in Caldas Novas. Travellers
interested in mythology might find their Mecca in Alto Paraíso,
in the mountains of Serra do Roncador (rough translation: mountains of the
snorer).
The predecessors of the Xavante Indios used to make jokes about this rock, that they could see themselves in its mirroring surface as in a hall of mirrors in an amusement park.
