Pousada Piquiri - a paradise

The Rio Piquiri separates the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

The Pousada Rio Piquiri, situated by the river of the same name which makes up the border between the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, may well have one of the best locations in the Pantanal. Since it lies far from any civilisation, you can enjoy the wonderful nature in total tranquility.

Many mammal and bird species live in the surroundings of this accommodation. It is a particularly ideal starting point for jaguar safaris by boat. In the time from June to November, your chances of observing free-living jaguars are very good.

One the one hand, this makes it a paradise for nature and bird enthusiasts. On the other hand, it is a perfect place for people looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful environment.

The banks of the Rio Piquiri are one of the richest natural reserves in the world. With its diversity of flora and fauna, this region offers its visitors an unforgettable experience - a true highlight of any Pantanal trip.

Especially in the early morning and late afternoon, a great number of animals can be watched in the nearby gallery forest and Acuri palm groves.

Room facilities:

The pousada has 4 large rooms for 2 to 5 persons each. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, fly screens on the windows and private bathrooms. In the air-conditioned restaurant there is a TV and a telephone. Due to its remoteness, the pousada is not on the public electricity grid. When needed, the required electricity is generated with an alternator.

The rooms are simple, clean and furnished practically. The food is excellent and the service is above the standard of the other accommodations in the Pantanal.

Journey:

The distance between Cuiabá (airport) and Porto Jofre (the end of the Transpantaneira) is about 275 km - 145 km of which are covered on a gravel road. Afterwards transfer on a small motor boat of about 45 minutes (30 km) on the Rio Piquiri. Depending on road and weather conditions, this can be rather exhausting.

Travelling by plane makes the trip easier and more comfortable, but also more expensive. The Pousada Piquiri has its own runway for small one-engine aircrafts, so that the trip there from Poconé only takes about 1 hour.

Our programmes during your stay at the Pousada Piquiri include primarily boat trips lasting several hours (jaguar safaris) and short hikes by day and night in the vicinity of the pousada.

Programm example (4 day/3 nights):

1st day:

Pickup at the airport in Cuiabá by our travel guide. Drive of about 110 km to Poconé on asphalted roads. Here you have lunch with a typically Brazilian family and enjoy the local Mato Grosso cooking (depends on arrival time at the airport).

From June to October:

Afterwards drive along the Transpantaneira (ca. 3-4 hours; 145 km on non-asphalt road), with several stops to watch the flora and fauna. Our destination is Porto Jofre. From here transfer of rougly 45 minutes by boat to the pousada.
or

year-round (closed on Christmas and New Year's Eve)

After lunch transfer of about 50 minutes from the airport in Poconé to the Pousada Piquiri. Upon arrival you move into your room and later have dinner. Afterwards nighttime safari with torches (flashlights) and headlights to watch nocturnal animals.

2nd day:

Breakfast at 5 am. You then set out on a 7-hour boat tour deep into the cerrado. In the midst of untouched nature, in the area around the Rio Tres Irmãos, Rio São Lourenço and Rio Piquiri, you track jaguars. Return to the pousada for lunch. After lunch and some rest, you go on a short hike in the surroundings of the pousada. With a bit of luck you will be able to see many mammals (tapirs, giant otters, swamp deer, capibaras, caimans, anteaters) and bird species, which live here throughout the year. The remainder of the afternoon is free. Dinner and overnight stay at the pousada. Upon request, another nighttime safari to track nocturnal animals is possible.

3rd day:

On a sunrise tour (ca. 5 am) you experience the awakening of the Pantanal - a unique natural spectacle you should not miss. After breakfast hike on the grounds of the pousada. However, you can also spend the morning lying in a hammock, listening to the sounds of nature and relaxing.

After lunch, another boat tour to track wild animals is on the programme (4-5 hours). Particularly on the smaller streams near the Rio Piquiri you will be able to savour a singular beauty and tranquility and get to see numerous mammal and bird species. Return to the lodge and last dinner.

4th day:

After breakfast transfer by boat/car (or airplane respectively) to Poconé and drive to the airport.

Note:

Due to the long trip, this tour is only possible if you arrive in Cuiabá no later than noon and leave at noon or in the afternoon at the earliest. Otherwise the programme has to be changed and extended accordingly (stop and overnight stay at a different accommodation along the Transpantaneira).

Please note that on the flight to the Pousada Piquiri a maximum of 10 kg apiece may be taken along. We are happy to keep the rest of your luggage in a safe place for you in Poconé.
