Chapada dos GuimarăesThe town of Chapada lies about 70 km north of Cuiabá and has roughly 16,000 inhabitants. Chapada dos Guimaraes is a rocky high plain, situated 836 m above sea level. Gorges, mesas, caves, rivers and waterfalls are parts of this impressive landscape. After the Amazon region in the north of the state of Mato Grosso and the Pantanal, Chapada is the third ecosystem in this region, a unique worldwide phenomenon.
The Véu-da-Noiva waterfall, at nearly 96 m, is the highest waterfall around. Another attraction is the Mirante belvedere from which you get a beautiful view of the surroundings. Mirante is also the geographical focal point of South America. In the recreational area of Salgadeira, several rivers flow together and small waterfalls form basins in which you can take a bath. Among the vegetation are the Jacaranda tree (rosewood, palisander), multi-coloured orchids and lilies. Long-beaked toucans and macaws make for more spots of colour in the landscape. On the way to the small town Chapada dos Guimaraes you pass by the Portal do Inferno (Gate of Hell) with its 100-m abyss. The rock formations remind one of American canyons. In Chapada there is a 200-year-old chapel called Santa Anna dos Sacramentos, the last monument in the area left from the Baroque period. Located equally far from both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, this region was crossed by the Paleo Indians during their walk through South America. This is documented by well-known archaeological findings. These majestic rock formations are where the sources of the various rivers in the area originated. A tour to Chapada dos Guimaraes is bookable as an extension to every Pantanal tour or see tour 12. Copyright of 1998 - 2008 by sabiá brasilinfo All rights reserved.
