Tour 2.2: Chapada dos Guimaraes - Pousada Rio Claro - Curicaca-Lodge

6 days/5 nights

This programme focuses on the different seasons in Pantanal; its dynamics are adjusted according to different months and times of year. In practice, that means that you can always stay where there is most to be seen. Your accommodation will change three times. That way, you can see the disparate landscapes and make an optimum of experiences in Pantanal throughout the year. Another highlight is the highland of Chapada Guimarães with its majestic rock formations, caves, grottos and countless waterfalls. The tours include walks through the natural beauty of Pantanal on foot, on horseback, by boat and, in parts, by car. You will be accompanied by an educated and competent travel guide, who will be exclusively at your disposal 24 hours a day.

Day 1 to Day 2 (1 night):

Our travel guide will pick you up from the airport in Cuiabá; then, a drive in an A/C-equipped minivan or passenger car to Chapada dos Guimarães. There, you will spend one night at the Hotel Turismo. The Hotel Turismo is located in downtown Chapada and features 30 rooms - plus a swimming pool. All rooms with bath/shower, A/C, TV, "Frigobar"; furnished modestly, but clean and practical.

Lunch in Chapada dos Guimarães, in a regional restaurant. Followed by a visit to the national park. During the hike through the highlands, one has the opportunity to bathe under one of the many waterfalls. Also, a visit to the cave "Casa de Pedra" (with a sub-terranean river), view from Morro de São Jerônimo; visit to the highest waterfall in the region Véu de Noiva – with a height of 96 m – which falls into a majestic canyon.

Day 2 to Day 4 (2 nights): Pousada Rio Claro (Pantanal)

After breakfast drive from Chapada dos Guimarães to Poconé in the air-conditioned vehicle (about 170 km). Here you will eat lunch with a typically Brazilian family. After lunch ride on the Transpantaneira to the last lodge in Pantanal. Even on the side of the Transpantaneira you will be able to see the first animal and plant species. Depending on schedule, there will be short stops to watch and photograph the animals. After your arrival at Pousada Rio Claro, you can move to your rooms and freshen up. Afterwards, you can join more tours, depending on your stamina. Or if you want, you can simply relax by the pool.

As a follow-up to that, you can go on a boat trip on the river watching birds, reptiles and other animals living by and in the river. While the sun goes down, you will be fishing piranhas. Return to the lodge and dinner. On request, you can go on another tour at night, tracking caimans and other nocturnal animals. On the following day, further trips on horseback, by boat and on foot will be on the schedule. In the afternoon of the 5th day, a car will take you to the region, where you can watch a lot of animals. You will walk for about two kilometres through untouched gallery forests, experiencing the singular beauty of Pantanal from a bird’s eye view. After that return to the lodge, dinner and another night-time safari to track nocturnal animals.

Day 4 to Day 6 (2 overnights): Fazenda Carandá– Poconé - Curicacá-Lodge

After breakfast, you will say goodbye to the Fazenda Carandá and go by airplane to Poconé. There, you can once again freshen up a bit; after that, you switch vehicles and proceed to the Transpantaneira (Curicaca Lodge). This Lodge is located on the Transpantaneira, km 25 (followed by another 3 km of privately-owned roadway). These accommodations were newly renovated in 2008, and feature 10 rooms. All rooms are equipped with a fan and a bath/shower. The pousada also features a very nice swimming pool.

Curicacá-Lodge

From the pousada, you can start on various tours through the Pantanal; by boat, canal trips (paddleboat) or on foot, to the adjacent forest. Yet also tours along the Transpantaneira are possible – to get to know the diverse flora und fauna in this area of the Pantanal. The Lodge is one of the best points for Birdlovers, but also you can see a lot of other animals in this reserve region of the Pantanal.

Day 6: Pantanal – Cuiabá

After breakfast (or according to departure time), drive to the airport in Cuiabá. If your flight (as is typical) does not leave until 17:15 pm from Cuiabá, additional tours will be conducted in the late morning, on horseback or on foot. In this case, lunch at the pousada, followed by the drive to the airport. Extension days or subsequent programs possible.
