Tour 6.1: Pantanal - wild animals - feelings of security

7 days/6 nights from Cuiabá

This programme focuses on the different seasons in the Pantanal; its dynamics are adjusted according to different months and times of year. In practice, that means that you can always stay where there is most to be seen. Your accommodation will change three times. That way you can see the disparate landscapes and make an optimum of experiences in the Pantanal throughout the year. Another highlight is the highland of Chapada dos Guimarães with its majestic rock formations, caves, grottos and countless waterfalls. The tours include walks through the natural beauty of the Pantanal on foot, on horseback, by boat and, in parts, by car. You will be accompanied by an trained and competent travel guide, who will be exclusively at your disposal 24 hours a day.

Itinerary

1st day: Cuiabá – Pousada Piuval

Our travel guide picks you up at Cuiabá airport. 100 km drive to Poconé on asphalt roads, lunch in Poconé at a typically Brazilian family's house. Then a drive of about 17 km to your first accommodation, the Pousada Piuval. Assignment of rooms. You can refresh yourself a bit, and later there is the possibility to go on a small boat tour on the nearby Piuval lake and to go horseback riding. After dinner there will be a night-time safari to watch nocturnal animals. Overnight stay at the Pousada Piuval.

2nd day: Pousada Piuval – Jaguar-Eco-Lodge

At around 5 o'clock in the morning you go on a sunrise tour to see the morning ritual of the birds before sunrise. The Pantanal awakes and the day begins, a stunning natural spectacle. After breakfast a hike gives you a first impression of the variety of the local vegetation, birds and animals. Here you get the opportunity to watch the nests of the Jabiru stork or the blue Hyacinth macaw, to name only two of the many bird species. A horseback ride is one of the best ways of exploring Pantanal.

After lunch you go by car to the Jaguar-Eco lodge (approx. 104 km) on the Transpantaneira. On the road you make several stops to watch and take pictures of the animals along the Transpantaneira. Upon arrival assignment of rooms. At night there is another nighttime safari to watch nocturnal animals. With a bit of luck you are able to watch a population of Hyacinth macaws, which have been spotted near this lodge for many years.

3rd day: Jaguar safari from Porto Jofre (full-day excursion)

You get up at 5 o'clock. Drive to Porto Jofre, the end point of the Transpantaneira. After your arrival, you have breakfast here. Later you embark on a five-hour boat tour that takes you deep into the cerrado, into untouched nature in the area of the rivers Rio Tres Irmãos, Rio São Lourenço and Rio Piquiri, to track jaguars. If you have already seen a jaguar, your guide will do what he can to track other animals for you, such as giant otters, anteaters, monkeys and all kinds of bird species. At early noon return by boat to Porto Jofre, where you have a picnic lunch. After lunch there is another boat tour to track jaguars, but also other interesting animal species located in this area. Towards 16:30 pm return to the Jaguar-Eco lodge. Dinner and overnight stay at the Jaguar-Eco lodge. Your best chances of seeing a jaguar are in the months from June to late November.

4th to 6th day: Pousada Rio Claro

After breakfast drive on the Transpantaneira to the last accommodation in the Pantanal. Even on the side of the Transpantaneira you can see the first animal and plant species. Depending on schedule there will be short stops to watch and photograph the animals. After your arrival at the Pousada Rio Claro, you can move to your rooms and freshen up. Afterwards you can take more tours, depending on your stamina. Or if you want, you can simply relax by the pool.

Later you can go on a boat trip on the river to watch birds, reptiles and other animals living by and in the river. While the sun goes down you fish piranhas. Return to the lodge and dinner. On request you can go on another tour at night, to track caimans and other nocturnal animals. On the following day further trips on horseback, by boat and on foot will be on the schedule. In the afternoon of the 5th day, a car takes you to a region where you can watch a lot of animals. You walk for about two km through untouched gallery forests, experiencing the singular beauty of the Pantanal. After that return to the lodge, dinner and another night-time safari to track nocturnal animals.

6th day: Pantanal – Chapada dos Guimarães

After breakfast ride to Chapada dos Guimarães, a completely different kind of landscape. You watch the sun go down from the top of the high plateau, the Cidade de Pedra. Lunch and dinner in the community and stop for the night at the Hotel Turismo or at the Pousada Penhasco, the best accommodation in Chapada.

7th day: Chapada dos Guimarães – Cuiabá

After breakfast visit to the national park with its many waterfalls (the highest, Véu de Noiva, with a height of 96 m). Your opportunity to take a refreshing bath under one of the falls. Return to Cuiabá airport. End of programme (departure from Cuiabá usually at around 05.00 pm).
