Praia do Forte In 1551 the region known today as, Praia do Forte, was situated in the
bay of Tatuapara. It was of great strategic importance to colonists who
settled beyond the city of Sao Salvador. During this period, Garcia
D'Avila - a young merchant who came to Brazil in 1549 with Tomι da
Souza, the first Governor General- began to build the first 'Tower
House' (Torre Singuela de Sao Pedro de Rates); a building with medieval
architectural characteristics, which served, in part, as an observation
post for ships that sailed the coast of the recently discovered and
highly coveted land- Brazil. Besides being a base for naval activities, Praia do Forte was also the founding point of what was to become the largest estate in the history of the world, a land area of over 800.000 km2 (1/10 of the total area of Brazil), comprising farms for animal breeding and coconut plantations, and covering an area from Bahia to the state of Maranhγo (greater than France and the British Isles combined). Today, the remaining ruins are of great historic and architectural importance, and have been restored by the Garcia d'Avila foundation. The doors are open to the public, and profit from tickets goes towards the conservation of the buildings and surrounding land. With the arrival of the coconut plantations, many families were attracted to the region. The planting and harvesting being carried out by men, with women and children assisting: coconut oil was pressed and used, as were the palm leaves for making hats and covering roofs. Many men ended up becoming sailors, others ferrymen across the River Pojuca, or fishermen, building primitive houses near the fort. Today the characteristics of the buildings are far from the original, although there are rare ones that were modernized over time, with brick and ceramic tiles.
