Ilha Marajo

Bathed by Atlantic Ocean and by the rivers Amazonas and Tocantins, it’s part of the largest fluvio-marine archipelago on the world. Plateaus mainly compose its relief, so during the intense rainy periods, from February to May, part of its territory is flooded. Therefore, it has the appropriate conditions to the breeding of buffalos, and it has the biggest flock on Brazil. There, these animals are normally used on the transportation, on fields or on the city, and their meat is the base of some typical dishes on the region. Visiting a farms is a good way to know the Marajó environment, mainly the several birds springs. On the Ilha de Marajó side to the sea, there are beaches  with small white sand dunes and coconut palms. The regional culture is present on the presentations of folkloric dances, like lundu and carimbó.

MARAJÓ: an immense beautiful inharitance of nature

Marajó Island is larger than some countries in Europe all together. With its 48 thousand sq. km. made up of immense ranches stocked with cattle, buffalos and bubalis. Forest inhabited by tapirs, deers, pacas, agoutis, and various other animals. Narrow river-banks throbbing with life, where turtles and alligators swin in peace and the birds soar in the sky whitout fear of man.

Large lakes and tiny rivers rich in fish, which cut through the green vegetation in a sort of trail which terminates with the meeting of the waters of the rivers Tocantins and Amazon river creats a spectacle with takes one’s breath away; a huge tidal wave produced as a result of the struggle between the sweet and salt waters. This is the site where two thousand years ago one of the most important civilizations of South America was founded, which left traces of its arts specially in ceramics to be appreciated until today.
