São Luis São Luis, the states capital and main city of Maranhão, is located in a charming island, surrounded by beautiful beaches, dunes and mangroves. São Luis is the only capital city in Brazil that was not founded by the Portuguese. It was in fact born under the French rule, being named after Louis XXIII, the king of France. The city was later invaded by the Dutch, who in their turn were expelled by the Potuguese. It was under the Prtuguese rule that São Luis flourished as an impatant port, and today the capital is one of the cities in which the Portuguese flavor and culture are most vividly retained. Because of such interesting historical background and its unique, well-preserved Portuguese colonial architecture, São Luis was declared a Mankind Heritage Site by UNESCO.
